The Sun Newspaper website on Saturday filed a picture and caption which were not exactly what they reported to be. It related to their reporting of a friendly against Dublin soccer team Shamrock Rovers and although the game was only a pre season warm up it shouldn't be allowed to be published without being highlighted. The photograph shows the player Steven Taylor and has the caption: "SHAM-ROCKER ... Taylor celebrates his friendly goal for Newcastle" In fact it is not a photograph of Taylor in Dublin.
It is not ethical for any newspaper group to misrespresent the truth of a photograph.
The photograph shows the player wearing a strip different to the one the Newcastle team wore on the day. This image from the Newcastle United website shows his team members wearing a strip with the Addidas logo white out of black - all the team wore white Addidas logos out of black. This is not the strip Taylor wears in the photograph on the Sun website. To see the celebrations taken at the match in Dublin check out this excellent image from Ken Sutton - note the logo!! You will also see that the squad didn't wear numbers on their shorts for this fixture but in the Sun picture the squad number is clearly visible on the shorts.
This may appear to be petty and in the overall scheme of things unimportant but it is sloppy and cheap journalism. People have a right to expect good reporting and if something purports to be from an event then it should be - if it is a file picture that is fine too. But a file picture should be identified as such and not be passed off as representing something it isn't.
